I really enjoyed the Assessment in E-Learning class because it was challenged me. As I enter a new phase of my life, the empty nester, I need to find ways to keep busy and stay challenged. I am not sure I will feel that way when the weather changes, but for now, during this cold, swowy, brutal winter it is perfect.

Week 7 Journaling for Assessment in E-Learning

This has been a difficult week. The upside is that I finished my project! I liked this project because it challenged me to try new Web tools that I can ultimately use in my classroom.

This project took me a long time and I spent a lot of hours working on it. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was meant by assessment tools for my imaginary online class. Also, Monday morning when I opened the class content area I noticed that the rubric for our self assessment was different. I started to freak out! Good thing Ted noticed that they were different too and already posted a question about it in the discussion board. Within hours the confusion over the rubrics was clarified.

Once I understood what was meant by assessment tools I was able to get focused. Working on the assessment tools was both time consuming and challenging since these were not tools that I chose for my midterm project. I had to spend allot of time learning about the tools and understanding how to use them before I could write about them.

I do want to thank my classmates for helping me figure out the requirements for this project. Without them I would not have been able to finish my project on time.

Week 6 Journaling for Assessment in E-Learning

This week we worked on a survey that we are to give to our students at the beginning of our course. The survey needed to contain 10 open-ended questions. Since survey monkey only allows you to have 10 free questions all of my questions needed to be open-ended. Having an engineering back ground I feel that my questions do not provide insight into me. Additionally, I wanted to add other questions that were not open-ended in order to gather information that I felt was necessary to create my course. For example, I wanted to ask on a scale from 1 to 10 what is your comfort level with using your computer and the internet.

We also received the requirements for our project this week and I just started. I have spent all of my time reworking my 4 objectives. Hopefully once they are set and I can proceed! Hopefully I did not spend too much time on my objectives and now I am way behind!

Lastly, I once again need to express my love for YouTube! This is an excellent video that gives you a great picture of what our students today are like. I plan on showing this to my own students. I am sure they will say, “Yep, Thats us!”

I love YouTube!

I wish I had watched this movie on the Pirates of the Carrebean’s interpretation of Bloom’s Taxonomy before I created my table. It’s funy!

This week I had a hard time figuring out what to do. The directions were clear; I just struggled to move from understanding to interpreting to doing the work. Usually I can get started immediately on an assignment. This assignment took me two days to interpret before I could get started. After I completed my assignment and posted it I received very helpful comments. What I realized from reviewing the comments is that I really did not understand how my activities fit into the Bloom’s Taxonomy chart. What I did is look at the strong verbs and the category where most of the verbs fit. That verb placement dictated the category where I placed my activity. What I discovered from reading the comments is that my activity could fit in more than one category.

After the student chooses the Web tool the student is to create a media piece (media of their choice that can be viewed on the computer) that explains how to use the tool. Finished product should include an example of how it can be used in the classroom. Video should be no longer that 10 minutes and should follow the criteria provided in the video.

The students we are educating today have grown up in a digital world. As educators we must pick up the pace and stay relevant in order to keep them engaged. This video I found on youtube today drives that point home!

Week 4 Journaling for Assessment in E-Learning

What I enjoyed this week is working with Edmodo, an educational social networking site. I created an account and started to play with it. I plan to introduce it and begin using it with my reading class in the next couple of weeks.

I agreed with the readings this week that online teachers need to set boundaries because if you don’t you will be a slave to everyone’s time zones. You would have not life. I like it that our instructor posted that she was off on Sunday’s. Good for her, modeling for us that it is important to take a day off and have time for yourself to reenergize.

Another reality of online teaching is connection issues. Saturday night we were having problems with our internet service, charter.net. We could not open everything and it hindered my homework. Also the blizzard and the potential power loss were stressful. If I were an online teacher I think I would have been panicking. On top of that I have been sick with the flu and in bed all day with my computer, so going out to get a connection elsewhere was not an option. Also we live in a small town and wireless cafes are not open in the evening. That is a problem.

Lastly, I learned how to create objectives with objective builder. However, I am not good at it yet. I did receive excellent feedback on my objectives and will go back and make revisions.
